Today we explore open data in health and medicine.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/datablog\/2019\/jul\/17\/infectious-disease-fatalities-rise-in-australia-as-overall-death-rate-falls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Infectious disease rates are on the rise in Australia<\/a>, with more people now dying from septicaemia, HIV\/AIDS, and hepatitis. Open data helps health planners prepare for emergencies, which makes responses to health crises more efficient. Data-based decisions are more robust. Shareable data such as these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/influenza\/surveillance_monitoring\/updates\/latest_update_GIP_surveillance\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current strains of flu<\/a> help health services plan and prepare for the worst.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u200bThe <a href=\"https:\/\/rdcu.be\/b2cp9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Malaria science community<\/a> sees open data as a catalyst to innovation and the discovery of new medicines.\u00a0 Malaria remains one of the most devastating infectious diseases with approximately\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwarn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">212 million infections and 429,000 deaths\u202feach year<\/a>.\u202f Gains made by Antimalaria vaccines are threatened by growing drug resistance. Researchers from Griffith University\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/institute-glycomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for\u202fGlycomics<\/a>\u202fshare research data with other researchers via the Worldwide\u202fAntimalarial Resistance Network\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwarn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WWARN<\/a>.\u202f This sharing increases the understanding and efficacy of malaria drugs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13790\" src=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2020\/02\/wwarnwebsite.jpg?w=1024\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The benefits of open data are many.\u00a0 Open data can:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>democratize\u202faccess\u200b\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>increase transparency\u200b and integrity\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>facilitate research\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>facilitate efficiency and provide support for decisions\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>help create new data and build public trust\u202fin science\u200b\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>help businesses and researchers map data\u202fvisually\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There are numerous risks with not sharing data as detailed in this Times Higher Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/blog\/risks-not-sharing-data-are-greater-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>. It may seem hard to manage data, share it securely, or describe it so that others can access and understand it. These problems can be avoided by good data practices at the outset.
