{"id":13811,"date":"2020-03-07T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/griffithlibrary.wordpress.com\/?p=13811"},"modified":"2020-04-17T14:36:16","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T04:36:16","slug":"happy-open-data-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/library\/2020\/03\/07\/happy-open-data-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Open Data Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13813\" src=\"https:\/\/griffithlibrary.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/security-2168234_640.jpg?w=590\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Happy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/opendataday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Data Day<\/a>!\u00a0Today we\u00a0celebrate\u00a0with some incredible\u00a0collections as data.\u00a0\u00a0Cultural institutions\u00a0including\u00a0Galleries,\u00a0Libraries,\u00a0Archives and\u00a0Museums\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GLAM_(industry_sector)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLAM<\/a>),\u00a0collect, preserve and share objects of research\u00a0interest including books, diaries,\u00a0artefacts, photographs,\u00a0sound recordings,\u00a0specimens and much more.\u00a0These\u00a0institutions\u00a0work\u00a0in innovative ways\u00a0to\u00a0digitize\u00a0their\u00a0collections and make them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ands.org.au\/working-with-data\/fairdata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0Below\u00a0are some\u00a0exciting projects which have\u00a0digitised\u00a0corpus, images\u00a0and other objects\u00a0for use as data by researchers and the public.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Late last year the\u00a0Australian\u00a0Data Archive\u00a0released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dataverse.ada.edu.au\/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.26193\/MP6WRS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Historical Census and Colonial Data Archive<\/a>\u00a0(HCCDA), a collection of\u00a0Australian colonial census publications and reports covering the period from 1833 to 1901.\u00a0The corpus includes 18,638 pages of text\u00a0and\u00a0208 maps all with full digital images, text conversion and individually identified pages and tables.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0Smithsonian\u00a0just\u00a0launched its new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/openaccess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open\u00a0Access platform\u00a0<\/a>,\u00a0releasing 2.8 million high-resolution two\u00a0and three dimensional images\u00a0into the public domain\u00a0for\u00a0use and downloading.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Vatican Library recently\u00a0unveiled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spotlight.vatlib.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thematic Pathways on the Web<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0narratives and over 26,000 annotations for\u00a0important\u00a0manuscripts in its collection.\u00a0\u00a0The technologies used in the project\u00a0support\u00a0comparative analysis of texts and images from different manuscripts,\u00a0making annotation easy to save as well as share.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngv.vic.gov.au\/explore\/collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Gallery of Victoria<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0digitised over\u00a090\u00a0per cent of its collection\u00a0for the public to access\u00a0online,\u00a0with more\u00a0than 30,000 images of works in the\u00a0public\u00a0domain available to download at high resolution for free for publications and non-commercial use.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>All these\u00a0GLAM projects rely on the\u00a0use of standardised metadata to describe\u00a0and link\u00a0the objects\u00a0to make them discoverable.\u00a0\u00a0As a result,\u00a0some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/openaccess\/devtools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collections<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0accessible\u00a0via\u00a0application programming interfaces\u00a0(APIs).\u00a0\u00a0APIs\u00a0request and receive specific bits of data from large corpuses of information\u00a0and\u00a0allow you to\u00a0explore the data far deeper than a search engine or index can.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A great way to learn\u00a0and use APIs is via\u00a0digital historian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/timsherratt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tim\u00a0Sherrat\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glam-workbench.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLAM\u00a0workbench<\/a>\u00a0.
