While the world struggles to\u00a0<\/span>come to terms with novel coronavirus<\/span>, in malaria affected\u00a0<\/span>countries current cases of COVID-19 remain a small percentage of the global\u00a0<\/span>infection rates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>But<\/span>\u00a0the situation is rapidly evolving<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This rapidly changing\u00a0<\/span>situation requires renewed efforts to prevent, detect and treat malaria<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as part of the strategy to\u00a0<\/span>protect communities from the COVID-19 infection<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years progress in\u00a0<\/span>reducing malaria<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>related deaths have plateaued\u00a0<\/span>with no significant gains in reducing new infection<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0between 2017\u00a0<\/span>(416,000 deaths)\u00a0<\/span>and 2018<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>405,000 deaths)<\/span>\u00a0as reported by the WHO\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>World Malaria Report\u00a0<\/span>2019<\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To us t<\/span>he mosquito may seem like an annoying summertime pest\u00a0<\/span>but\u00a0<\/span>to people in many countries<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a mosquito bite can be deadly.\u00a0<\/span>Saturday<\/span>\u00a025 April is\u00a0<\/span>World Malaria Day<\/span><\/a>, a recognition of the ongoing global fight towards the prevention and ultimate elimination of malaria. This year\u2019s theme is\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/i>Zero Malaria\u00a0<\/span><\/i>starts<\/span><\/i>\u00a0with me<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, there are only a limited number of drugs available to prevent malaria, with parasite drug resistance being an increasingly serious issue. Researchers at the\u00a0<\/span>Griffith Research Institute for Drug Discovery<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are working hard to develop new and innovative drugs to prevent and treat this devastating disease. In 2017, our fight towards a cure edged a little closer following successful human clinical trials of a malaria vaccine developed by Griffith\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Institute for Glycomics<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
