Dr Fiona Foley\u2019s sculpture of three native\u00a0<\/span>honey bee<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Public Artwork for Cato Square<\/span><\/a> [featured below] not only recognises how crucially important bees are as pollinators within the Australian and global ecosystem but their historical importance as a<\/span>\u00a0food source for Indigenous Australians.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0vital<\/span>\u00a0role of bees in contributing to poverty alleviation and hunger eradication as well as preserving a healthy environment\u00a0<\/span>is recognised annually with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>World Bee Day<\/span><\/a>, 20 May<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>ay\u00a0<\/span>provides an opportunity for\u00a0<\/span>every one of\u00a0<\/span>us\u00a0<\/span>to promote actions that will protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats, improve their abundance and diversity, and support the sustainable development of beekeeping.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

World Bee Day\u00a0<\/span>is also<\/span>\u00a0p<\/span>remiering a global viewing of the\u00a0<\/span>Waggle Dance Challenge<\/span>, the result of\u00a0<\/span>an attempt to achieve 20,000\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>waggle dance for World Bee Day<\/span><\/a>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0videos, from 20 countries, in 20 days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporting Dr Foley\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0artwork, the\u00a0<\/span>following snapshot of open access research, held in\u00a0<\/span>Griffith Research Online<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0is contributing to\u00a0<\/span>the research around\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>ee-friendly environment<\/span>s, especially urban\u00a0<\/span>green space<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
