We\u2019re here to help with some tips on the five main stages for getting off to a good start:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Define the assessment type<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What type of assessment are you doing? Is it an essay, report, presentation? \u00a0Find out how to structure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/library\/study\/writing-your-assignment\/assignment-writing#structure\">essays<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/do-not-publish\/jackie2\/academic-skills\/nested-content\/assignment-writing#literature-reviews\">literature reviews<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/do-not-publish\/jackie2\/academic-skills\/nested-content\/assignment-writing#report-writing\">reports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/do-not-publish\/jackie2\/academic-skills\/nested-content\/assignment-writing#reflective-writing\">reflective writing<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/library\/study\/writing-your-assignment\/assignment-writing\">Assignment Writing<\/a>\u00a0 webpage.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Unpack the task<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Get a better understanding of what is required for your assessment by unpacking the task. There are three types of words to look out for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/writingandlearning.calpoly.edu\/content\/gwr\/wpe\/tips\/directive_words\"><strong>Directive words<\/strong><\/a> tell you how to approach the assignment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Topic words <\/strong>identify the major concepts in your task as these are the keywords you will use to start searching for resources.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limiting words<\/strong> like dates, locations or populations help narrow the scope of your assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Research the assignment topic<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Create a search strategy by identifying the topic or limiting words in your assignment question or marking criteria.
