This year marks the 20<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0Anniversary of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Institute f<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>To celebrate we explore<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>what\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>research<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>glycomics<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0and why it is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>important<\/span>\u00a0to us both as individ<\/span>uals and as a global community<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sugar language in our\u00a0<\/span><\/b>body<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every cell in our body is decorated with sugars which are essential to our health and wellbeing<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span>\u00a0is the study of th<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>sugar\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>language<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0within our body, referred to as the\u00a0<\/span>glycome<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Unfortunately,<\/span>\u00a0this sugar language can\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>be used negatively by our body resulting in\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>ajor health problems\u00a0<\/span>such as\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ancer,\u00a0<\/span>viral\u00a0<\/span>arthritis\u00a0<\/span>and infectious diseases<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A primary focus of the research undertaken by the\u00a0<\/span>Institute\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>discover\u00a0<\/span>the role that sugars play in disease and\u00a0<\/span>to use this\u00a0<\/span>knowledge to develop new\u00a0<\/span>diagnostic<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>drugs and vaccines\u00a0<\/span>to diagnose, treat and prevent\u00a0<\/span>disease<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Established in 2000, and now comprising over 200 researchers<\/span>\u00a0and support staff<\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span>Institute for\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a world-leader in fighting diseases of global impact through discovery and translational science<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The infographic below highlights some of the institute\u2019s achievements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From inception to today\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span>stablished 20 years ago through investment by Griffith University and the Queensland Government<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>The Institute for\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is based at the Gold Coast campus and\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0now one of Australia\u2019s flagship multidisciplinary biomedical research institutes.\u00a0<\/span>Over the next few months, we will be featuring interviews with some of the original scientists at the Institute for\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span>\u00a0who<\/span>\u00a0will take us on\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0journey from the Institute\u2019s inception to it becoming a world<\/span>–<\/span>renowned<\/span>\u00a0research centre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
