LGBT<\/span><\/i>IQ\u00a0<\/span><\/i>History Month<\/span><\/i>\u00a0was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson to commemorate the first and second marches on Washington in 1979 and 1987 for\u00a0<\/span>LGBTQIA+<\/span>\u00a0rights. His aim was to observe\u00a0<\/span>LGBTQIA+<\/span>\u00a0history and the history of the gay civil rights movement at the time. Today<\/span>\u00a0it is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community while providing role models and building community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LGBT<\/span><\/i>IQ\u00a0<\/span><\/i>History Month<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on 11 October.<\/span>\u00a0As of 2020,\u00a0<\/span>it is a\u00a0<\/span>month-long celebration that is specific to Hungary, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Greenland, and the city of Berlin.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual month-long observance began in Australia in October 2016 when\u00a0<\/span>Minus 18<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>organised<\/span>\u00a0the first Australian\u00a0<\/span>LGBT<\/span>IQ<\/span>\u00a0History Month in partnership with the\u00a0<\/span>Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Safe Schools Coalition<\/span>.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
