Griffith Archive\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>latest digital exhibition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0shines the spotlight on<\/span>\u00a0one of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>truly remarkable pioneers\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>Griffith University<\/span>\u2019s history<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>Ortrun<\/span>\u00a0Zuber-<\/span>Skerritt<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ortrun\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0teaching career began in her home country of Germany, but\u00a0<\/span>during a visit to the Gold Coast she<\/span>\u00a0fell in love with Australia<\/span>\u00a0and made the bold decision<\/span>\u00a0to emigrate<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This<\/span>\u00a0was no<\/span>\u00a0small undertaking<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0a single mother\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0a young son, she was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leav<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0behind<\/span>\u00a0the support of her\u00a0<\/span>family a<\/span>s well as a<\/span>\u00a0tenured teaching position. Yet\u00a0<\/span>Ortrun\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0determination<\/span>, which would continue to serve her throughout the\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>hardships of her academic career<\/span>\u00a0in Australia<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>unyielding<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0She\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ound employment as a high school teacher, then a position at the University of Qu<\/span>eensland and\u00a0<\/span>soon\u00a0<\/span>completed her first doctoral thesis<\/span>, launching her academic career.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1974,\u00a0<\/span>Ortrun<\/span>\u00a0joined Griffith as our first female academic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ortrun\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0story spans continents and<\/span>\u00a0years of\u00a0<\/span>adversity<\/span>, with her achievements surpassing academia and\u00a0<\/span>extending into the development of leadership program<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
