International Day of People with Disability is held o<\/span>n 3 December each year<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>promotes<\/span>\u00a0awareness, understanding and acceptance of people\u00a0<\/span>who are living\u00a0<\/span>with disability<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This day is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability. You can start by reading some of\u00a0<\/span>their stories<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The United Nations firs<\/span>t introduced the day in 1992<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>hile\u00a0<\/span>some\u00a0<\/span>progress has been made since then,\u00a0<\/span>there are still\u00a0<\/span>too\u00a0<\/span>many barriers<\/span>\u2014political, social, economic and cultural\u2014<\/span>affecting<\/span>\u00a0people with disability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>On top of that, t<\/span>his year has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>brought<\/span>\u00a0its own challenges, which is why it is\u00a0<\/span>appropriate that the theme<\/span>\u00a0for 2020\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World\u2019<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, t<\/span>he Australian Network on Disability<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has partnered with the\u00a0<\/span>#<\/span>PurpleLightUp<\/span><\/a>\u00a0campaign<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to celebrate\u00a0<\/span>the contribution of people with disability in the workforce\u2014almost 400 million employees around the world.\u00a0<\/span>You can find out more about the #<\/span>PurpleLightUp<\/span>\u00a0online<\/span>\u00a0events\u00a0<\/span>via<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Australian Network on Disability<\/span>\u00a0website<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>In addition to\u00a0<\/span>#<\/span>PurpleLightUp<\/span>, you can\u00a0<\/span>also show support\u00a0<\/span>and spread awareness\u00a0<\/span>offline by wearing purple\u00a0<\/span>on 3 December<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>talking<\/span>\u00a0with your friends, family and colleagues<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
