Although\u00a0<\/span>2020 has been a\u00a0<\/span>difficult\u00a0<\/span>year, here at the Library we<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>embrace<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0the challenges<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>endeavoured<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>continue delivering quality services to our students,\u00a0<\/span>academics and researchers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>ur Library staff<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>not only\u00a0<\/span>gained new skills\u00a0<\/span>while adapting<\/span>\u00a0to different processes and\u00a0<\/span>technologies, but<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>used this opportunity to improve how we support the Griffith community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0<\/span>this year<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>draws to a close, we wanted to<\/span>\u00a0celebrat<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0how\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>worked<\/span>\u00a0together\u00a0<\/span>as part o<\/span>f Griffith to make the best of 2020.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Online workshops<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

F<\/span>aced with the reality of our students<\/span>, academics and researchers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>working and studying\u00a0<\/span>remotely<\/span>, the Library<\/span>\u00a0needed to pivot to online learning<\/span>, which<\/span>\u00a0meant moving\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>our workshops online for the first time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Trimester 2, our usual\u00a0<\/span>Earlybird<\/span>\u00a0workshops<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>were held online<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>enabling students<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0join the workshops<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with a click of a link and interact\u00a0<\/span>directly with Library staff\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0the learning materials being presented<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The success of the\u00a0<\/span>Earlybird<\/span>\u00a0workshop<\/span>s<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>increas<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in student and Library staff\u00a0<\/span>engagement, resulted<\/span>\u00a0in the Library offering extension workshops following Orientation Week to enhance students\u2019 skills with the help of the\u00a0<\/span>Writing, Re<\/span>searching and Referencing module<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Students weren\u2019t the only ones learning online:\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0Library\u2019s online workshops for researchers<\/span>\u00a0blend<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0seminar-style presentations with self-paced instruction.\u00a0<\/span>Surprisingly, despite delivering fewer sessions, attendance increased considerably due to the convenience of online delivery and\u00a0<\/span>lack of physical seating limitations<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>n an 8-month period,\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>online workshops for researchers attracted 2,195 attendees<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

COVID-19 library re-opening\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>arch<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the Library sadly had to close<\/span>\u00a0our physical library spaces and transition<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>supporting students and staff\u00a0<\/span>as we all worked\u00a0<\/span>from home<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>eturning<\/span>\u00a0to campus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>required additional flexibility<\/span>\u00a0in terms of COVID-1<\/span>9<\/span>\u00a0precautions<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>With sa<\/span>fety the priority<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Library staff worked behind the scenes\u00a0<\/span>in preparation<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0with s<\/span>neeze guards<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>installed at our front desks<\/span>, h<\/span>and sanitizer station<\/span>ed at entrances and desks<\/span>, and a whopping 1<\/span>,<\/span>836 seats removed from library spaces to\u00a0<\/span>maintain<\/span>\u00a0social distancing<\/span>\u00a0standards<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0We also initiated a quarantine process for returned libra<\/span>r<\/span>y items and lost property<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Successfully adapting to these many changes was satisfying, but the resounding highlight was welcoming the Griffith community back into our campus libraries<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Griffith Research Online\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span>riffith Research Online<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(GRO)<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Griffith\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0research repository<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0achieved a major milestone this year with\u00a0<\/span>20 million downloads<\/span><\/a>!\u00a0<\/span>In addition, GRO was ranked number 4 and 5 across Australian repositories for its percentage of Green Open Access and Total Open Access content<\/span>, respectively<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But GRO\u2019s success this year extends even further:\u00a0t<\/span>he\u00a0Library<\/span>‘s\u00a0<\/span>launch<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>Library Connect<\/span><\/a>, in combination with<\/span>\u00a0the transition to working from home, sparked the opportunity for a new approach to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sharing GRO content.\u00a0<\/span>The 20<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0Anniversary of the\u00a0<\/span>Institute for\u00a0<\/span>Glycomics<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was the ideal occasion to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>focus<\/span>\u00a0in on the stories\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>researchers\u00a0<\/span>behind the research<\/span>, with the resulting\u00a0<\/span>series of Q&A style posts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0highlighting the\u00a0<\/span>value of GRO from a different angle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2020 may not be finished quite\u00a0<\/span><\/span>yet, but<\/span><\/span>\u00a0looking back at\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the Library\u2019s achievements this year shows our dedication to making Griffith a safe place for learning, teaching and research, as well as our passion for<\/span><\/span>\u00a0continual improvement and innovation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Whatever the new year brings, our Library staff will be here to help.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
