The blue side says 'Social Justice'.\" width=\"400\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e agree that social justice is important,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">do we understand what it means or how we can actively practi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e it every day?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0February<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/social-justice-day\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">World Social Justice Day<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Library spoke to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experts.griffith.edu.au\/7965-dorothee-holscher\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dorothee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">H\u00f6lscher<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from Griffith<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s School of Human Services and Social Work\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the complex nature of social justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and how we can all make a difference<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">What do we mean when we talk about social justice?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is quite a loaded question.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e all seem to have a strong sense about injustice because we often feel when something is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">wrong<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Yet, the same cannot be said about social justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0feel it in the same way when something is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">right<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It seems to be much harder to settle on a shared understanding of social justice than<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0human rights. Through my PhD research, I discovered that whilst social work is defined by a commitment to social justice, there was little agreement to its meaning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I completed my PhD by publication, exploring different philosopher<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s, including<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschool.edu\/nssr\/faculty\/Nancy-Fraser\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nancy Fraser<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fraser<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0talks about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">abnormal justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">those times when a basic consensus or shared norm around a value or a principle, such as justice,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0seem possible, and debates about justice attain a kind of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">freewheeling character<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he describes the central norm of justice as\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">participatory parity<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, or equal participation, by which she means that anyone who is subjected to a particular governance system should have equal standing and equal say\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it. In this way, equal participation becomes a standard by which we assess our practices and their outcomes, look at obstacles to justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">look at factors that either hinder or enable social justice.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">So, in short, social justice is so much more than treating people equitably<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0It is about what happens between people and the structures that humans create that prevent certain groups of people from realising their full potential. It is about teasing out what is happening in the person<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">structure interface and about trying to intervene in these spaces\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to make life more liveable for all members of society<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. It is about giving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0everyone a fair chance to be well and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0live a good life.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And that is why I say social justice is like a Rubik\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ube<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a process, it\u2019s a standard, it\u2019s a norm, it\u2019s an explanatory tool and it has a ripple effect.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is quite complex, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0worth trying to come to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">terms<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with the different dimensions (cultural, economic, political) and levels in which injustices occur and in which justice can be promoted. Ultimately it is with this understanding that we all can seek to make a difference.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">We increasingly appreciate that there will be no justice between humans in the absence of justice between humans and other forms of life.<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:864,&quot;335559737&quot;:864,&quot;335559738&quot;:200,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Do the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals inform your research?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To me, questions surrounding the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UN Sustainable Goals<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are key, particularly in the field of social work, where traditionally humans have been front and centre of our concern. The idea of sustainability adds an ecological dimension to our research.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">f we destroy our relationship with any life, especially through\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the depletion of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">resources and the destruction of habitats, injustice and polarisation between humans are bound to increase.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Also<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0on the cutting edge of the social justice debate, and related to the question of sustainability, is research into\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">necropolitics<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/necropolitics\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Achille\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mbembe<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0states that governance is not just about organising and managing (public) life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it is also about organising and managing death. To put it somewhat crudely, it is about whose lives are regarded as worth protecting, and for whom it is considered acceptable to die.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I worry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0if we cannot figure out ways of living sustainably<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we will end up accepting and, even if implicitly, condoning the death of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">thers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is always<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0enlightening to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">observe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0which kinds of people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0matter as individuals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in public discourse and political decisions. Is it possible that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the far<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">away, poor, brown, and descendants of colonised peoples that tend to be disregarded? Why are these old patterns continuing? This is where I see one of the main fault lines along which societies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">are becoming increasingly polarised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e must be attentive to and reckon with the reasons underlying these kinds of dynamics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Who has inspired you?<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I greatly admire Nancy Fraser\u2019s writing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">owever<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the person who has made a particularly deep impact and continues to inspire me is Joan\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tronto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Her democratic ethic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of care is both political and practical. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t is very much in the here and now, so I draw a lot on her when trying to figure out what to do in everyday life. As she stated in a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ethicsofcare.org\/joan-tronto\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2009 interview<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8216;An ethic of care is an approach to personal, social, moral, and political life that starts from the reality that all human beings need and receive care and give care to others. The care relationships among humans are part of what mark us as human beings. We are always interdependent beings.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Meeting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tronto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was a pivotal moment for me as she\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">walks the talk<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I had become increasingly mindful that our environment can easily undermine any good intentions and disposition towards justice.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">his is where the ethics of care comes i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n. H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ow we live up to certain virtues must be seen in context<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Due to daily pressures and adverse circumstances, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0always live up to the standards we may be setting for ourselves and others<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Aiming to succeed is very important, but failure is an inevitable part of life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t has its beauty, as crazy as this may sound.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our Equity and Diversity course incorporates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0concepts such as care, self<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">compassion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and cultural humility. Be gentle and kind to yourself, acknowledge when something goes pear<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">shape<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, accept it, but then move on, learn from the experience, and try again. This is important when we chase such elusive goals as social justice at a time when the sustainability of life itself is under threat, but I think it is also a good maxim by which to live in other respects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0relationships,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and study.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14546\" src=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2021\/02\/Dorothee-1.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of a smiling Dr Dorothee H\u00f6lscher, who has short brown hair and black glasses. \" width=\"225\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Given the complexity of social justice, how can we integrate it into our lives?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e all have some scope, some sphere of influence, to raise our voice not only for ourselves but for others over whom we have influence or power (such as children, co<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">workers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0etc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">). As\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Iris-Marion-Young\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Iris Marion Young<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0writes, in\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Responsibility for Justice<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, nobody is exempt from responsibility for justice.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Young<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0encourages us to ask questions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re we actively participating in certain regimes of injustice? Are we keeping quiet about it? Are we trying to do the right thing but only quietly, on the side, when nobody else is looking? Are we speaking out and acting against injustice where we see it, despite the possible repercussions this may have?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat drives our decisions about what and what not to do?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">These are really difficult decisions to make, but it is important to be as conscious about these kinds of things as possible<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e can do this by honestly,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">openly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and humbly engaging with each other, and especially with others, who have a different horizon from ourselves, as our critical friends.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is where for me, the works of philosophers such as Nancy Fraser, Joan\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tronto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and Iris Marion Young come together in very handy and practical ways<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">good understanding of what we mean by justice, good analysis of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">what\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0going on and would need to change for the world to be more just, figuring out what it has to do with ourselves, and then finding spaces in which to make a real difference, no matter how small. And then, importantly, not just to do things because we expect to be effective, but because they are the right thing to do. Life becomes more enjoyable like this, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0just a bonus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>What led to the Community Service Award in 2020?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ue to the continuing coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Scott Morrison told visitor visa holders and international students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in April 2020 that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it was time for them to return to their home countries.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">At Griffith,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we found many international students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">couldn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0go home due to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">various<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0reasons<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">no flights, families in dire straits<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0loss of income.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">uring all the other challenges that the pandemic caus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we now had students in the classroom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with no means to pay\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">their study fees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0rent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0food.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">So, whilst our Vice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chancellor and other senior leaders had conversations with the Queensland Premier and became involved in national<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">level talks, on campus, academics,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and administrati<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0staff came together to address the issue in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">here and now<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Evolving into a shared project, we began calling individual students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and started a food bank. L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ocal and international students supported their peers wherever they could, with house calls and dinner invitations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">here was a lot of advocacy work going on.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hilst we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">could not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0address all the hardships we witnessed or impact the underlying causes, I think it is one little example of how ordinary people, whether victims of or bystanders to a particular injustice, can come together to do something about it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If the award can highlight the real
