Saturday 6\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>arch is\u00a0<\/span>Open Data Day<\/span>\u00a02021<\/span><\/a>\u2014<\/span>an<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>international celebration of open data, including university research data<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Events held on Open Data Day\u00a0<\/span>help to\u00a0<\/span>highlight<\/span>\u00a0the benefits of open data and encourage adoption of open data policies for governments,\u00a0<\/span>businesses<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>society<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The benefits of open data<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We<\/span>\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0all witnessed the benefits of open data in the past\u00a0<\/span>12<\/span>\u00a0months.\u00a0<\/span>As\u00a0<\/span>Professor Barbo<\/span>ur\u00a0<\/span>explains<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0the astonishingly short time frame of COVID-19 cause<\/span>\u00a0isolation<\/span>, symptom<\/span>\u00a0identification<\/span>, geno<\/span>me<\/span>\u00a0sequencing<\/span>, diagnostic test<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and potential treatment<\/span>\u00a0discoveries was only possible due to global open science efforts<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>So how can Griffith University researchers share r<\/span>esearch<\/span>\u00a0data in a way that makes<\/span>\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>for the benefit of society at large?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Data\u00a0<\/span><\/b>p<\/span><\/b>ublication\u00a0<\/span><\/b>s<\/span><\/b>upport<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Library has developed\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0repository,\u00a0<\/span>Griffith Research Online\u00a0<\/span>(GRO)\u00a0<\/span>Research Data Collection<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to make it easy for researchers to publish their data.\u00a0<\/span>GRO Research Data<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ollection is supported by linked storage to<\/span>\u00a0Griffith\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Research Storage Services<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and other approved locations<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Data<\/span>sets<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>submitted to GRO,\u00a0<\/span>such as Dr Chris Brown\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Fishscape<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and creative research\u00a0<\/span>works\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/span>The Other Fears<\/span><\/a>\u00a0exhibition by Jacinta Giles,\u00a0<\/span>can have Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) automatically minted to improve discovery and citation tracking. The service supports researchers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0efforts to make their data open<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>meets<\/span>\u00a0the Australian Research Council\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>policy mandates<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a<\/span>s well as the Open Access Directory\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>journal<\/span>s with<\/span>\u00a0open data policies<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
