Many disciplines<\/span>\u00a0use\u00a0<\/span>written texts\u00a0<\/span>as source material for\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>research, including\u00a0<\/span>journalism, history, political science, cultural and literary studies, business,\u00a0<\/span>law<\/span>\u00a0and education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Technology has\u00a0<\/span>given us the ability to\u00a0<\/span>digitise<\/span>\u00a0written materials<\/span>, meaning that<\/span>\u00a0some<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>mazing\u00a0<\/span>primary sources collected by galleries, libraries,\u00a0<\/span>archives<\/span>\u00a0and museums are<\/span>\u00a0now<\/span>\u00a0available online as text. In addition, large volumes of text are\u00a0now\u00a0<\/span>born digital<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>readily\u00a0<\/span>available for research, from transcripts of parliamentary and political debates to news and social media.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can<\/span>\u00a0we access and use these sources to ask new research questions?<\/span>\u00a0Is<\/span>\u00a0there a way\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>understand or interpret a collection of books,\u00a0<\/span>surveys<\/span>\u00a0or speeches all at once?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The answer\u00a0<\/span>to both these questions\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u2014<\/span>yes<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>via\u00a0<\/span>digital scholarship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Digital scholarship, using computational methods to mine and\u00a0<\/span>analyse<\/span>\u00a0text, has enabled new ways to read\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>compare texts within different contexts or across time,\u00a0<\/span>cultures<\/span>\u00a0or geographies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GALE Digital Scholar Lab<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Explore\u00a0<\/span>GALE Digital Scholar\u202fLab<\/span><\/a>, an innovative\u202fonline tool\u202ffor searching, preparing and analysing text as data from\u00a0<\/span>Gale\u2019s Primary Sources archive collections.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0The Lab\u202fopens\u202fnew possibilities for digital scholarship, allowing natural language processing tools to be applied to raw text data (OCR), facilitating discoveries and new insights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Six commonly used digital text analysis tools are included in the Lab including\u00a0<\/span>ngrams<\/span>, named entity recognition, topic modelling, parts of speech, sentiment analysis and clustering.\u00a0<\/span>Best of all, you\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0need to have\u00a0<\/span>any<\/span>\u00a0programming<\/span>\u00a0experience<\/span>\u00a0to make use of the Lab<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
