Have\u00a0you\u00a0noticed something different on your Google Scholar\u00a0<\/span>profile<\/span><\/a>\u00a0lately?\u00a0This new, unexpected addition is called\u00a0<\/span>Public Access<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Google<\/span><\/a>, this new\u00a0feature helps researchers\u00a0track and manage public access\u00a0<\/span>mandates<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for their\u00a0articles.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does\u00a0Google Scholar\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Public Access<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0work?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0three-step process:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Google uses natural language software to\u00a0identify\u00a0funder acknowledgements in\u00a0papers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. It\u00a0cross-references this\u00a0information\u00a0with\u00a0its\u00a0<\/span>database of funder\u00a0mandates<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Google searches for a free version of the paper on publishers\u2019\u00a0websites and in\u00a0various\u00a0open\u00a0repositories.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Google\u00a0does not check to see\u00a0whether\u00a0the article has any kind of\u00a0open\u00a0license\u00a0or badging.\u00a0It only checks to see if there is a freely\u00a0readable copy of the\u00a0article\u00a0available.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Is it accurate?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Just like\u00a0<\/span>other aspects<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of Google Scholar profiles,\u00a0the\u00a0data is\u00a0<\/span>imperfect<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It may say\u00a0papers are\u00a0not freely available, when in fact\u00a0<\/span>they are<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0It may also\u00a0wrongly attribute\u00a0the funding\u00a0source.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Google invites researchers to make their research\u00a0publicly available by uploading\u00a0a PDF\u00a0to Google Drive.\u00a0This option\u00a0should only be used as a\u00a0<\/span>last resort<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0This is\u00a0because\u00a0Google Drive:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
