With the growing conversations around climate change and\u00a0environmental\u00a0sustainability, this year\u2019s NAIDOC Week theme\u00a0<\/span>Heal\u00a0Country!<\/span><\/i>\u00a0seems to have arrived at just the right time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is NAIDOC Week?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NAIDOC stands for \u2018National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee\u2019, though the term \u2018Aborigines\u2019 is outdated\u00a0in the twenty-first century.\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>Committee\u2019s\u00a0origins<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can be traced to the 1920s, wherein\u00a0Aboriginal groups\u00a0emerged to increase awareness of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0peoples. Today, the term NAIDOC no longer refers to the Committee itself, but has grown\u00a0into\u00a0an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history,\u00a0culture\u00a0and achievements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s\u00a0the meaning of this year\u2019s theme?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Held this year\u00a0from\u00a04\u00a0–\u00a011 July,\u00a0<\/span>NAIDOC Week\u00a02021<\/span><\/a>\u00a0seeks to explore spiritual, physical, emotional, social and cultural sustainability by\u00a0speaking to\u00a0the country that nourishes us all.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme\u00a0<\/span>Heal Country!\u00a0<\/span><\/i>seeks substantive institutional,\u00a0structural\u00a0and collaborative reform that\u00a0Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have\u00a0been advocating, marching and fighting\u00a0in support of\u00a0for\u00a0more than\u00a0250 years.\u00a0Greater protections for\u00a0Indigenous lands.\u00a0Respect\u00a0for water systems.\u00a0Safeguards against the exploitation,\u00a0desecration\u00a0and destruction of sacred sites.\u00a0Understanding\u00a0of tens of thousands of years of Indigenous\u00a0culture,\u00a0values\u00a0and\u00a0practice.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
