Our first staff newsletter, the Great Griffith Gazette\u00a0(GGG),\u00a0began circulation\u00a0in mid-1973\u2014some eighteen months before teaching commenced at Griffith.\u00a0The Gazette was not published under any formal management direction\u00a0or guidelines. Rather,\u00a0it\u00a0was an initiative of two early staff members: Neil Thyer and Colin Phillips.<\/p>\n
Early Griffith University was a\u00a0handful of\u00a0spread-out buildings at Nathan campus,\u00a0some of them hundreds of metres apart\u00a0amongst\u00a0our\u00a0forest setting. Neil and Colin decided to start\u00a0the\u00a0newsletter to\u00a0connect the different business\/academic groups and create a sense of \u2018community\u2019\u00a0amongst staff.<\/p>\n
A look through the GGG shows that some of the issues existing nearly 50 years ago are still\u00a0<\/span>relevant<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>today<\/span>.\u00a0On-campus parking,\u00a0job opportunities for our graduates,\u00a0gender inequality in the workplace, mental health and university funding were all topics discussed in the publication.\u00a0Despite being circulated for Griffith employees, some of the content published was relevant to staff and students alike.<\/p>\n As time went on, Neil and Colin found that the demands of producing the GGG impacted their actual jobs.
