Did you know that\u00a0Griffith University was meant to be part of the University of Queensland (UQ)?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally, Griffith University College was going to be opened as a campus of UQ. However,\u00a0it was always intended that this new institution would eventually become independent of UQ\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0fully autonomous organisation.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our university was established by an Act of\u00a0parliament on 30 September 1971.\u00a0This\u00a0Act\u00a0was\u00a010 years\u00a0in the\u00a0making\u2014government\u00a0talks to create a second university institution for Brisbane had been circulating since 1961!\u00a0\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202fAs the 1960s progressed UQ was experiencing overcrowding in all its teaching areas. Humanities and Social Sciences spaces\u00a0and\u00a0resources\u00a0in particular had\u00a0become quite a problem for UQ management. A lack of federal and state government funding meant it would be 10 years before any serious effort was made to create a new Brisbane university.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Things began to move more quickly\u00a0in late 1970\u00a0when\u00a0the Queensland Government appointed the Griffith University Interim Council,\u00a0headed by our foundation Chancellor Sir Theodor Bray. After 10 years of government procrastination,\u00a0our university went from being\u00a0talk\u00a0to being planned, built and opened for teaching in just\u00a0five\u00a0years.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Official construction of Griffith University began on 3 October\u00a01972\u00a0and we held our first lecture on 10 March 1975.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
