Strong ties with our Asian neighbours, a School of Australian Environmental Studies\u00a0and\u00a0offering places to\u00a0mature-aged students were all quite radical initiatives for a university\u00a0in\u00a01970s Australia.\u00a0Likewise, offering\u00a0\u2018interdisciplinary\u2019\u00a0courses\u00a0was a fresh\u00a0alternative\u00a0to traditional degrees.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This interdisciplinary approach was placed at the heart of o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ur four foundation Schools,\u00a0influencing both\u00a0teaching and research.\u00a0For example,\u00a0sociology was seen as relevant to\u00a0all four\u00a0Schools:\u00a0Australian Environmental Studies, Humanities, Modern Asian Studies and Science.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In many ways this interdisciplinary approach was an experiment.\u00a0While some staff considered this teaching\/research model successful, there were early Griffith staff\u00a0who\u00a0felt the experiment had failed.\u00a0Some of our early students\u00a0also\u00a0believed the model failed to deliver on its intention.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vice Chancellor Professor Carolyn Evans\u00a0recently announced that she will be reinvigorating our founding student-centred interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research.
