In Australia, most of us take safe,\u00a0hygienic access to a toilet\u00a0for granted. People living in other parts of the world are not so lucky.\u00a0According to the UN, approximately\u00a0<\/span>3.6 billion people<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are living without access to\u00a0a\u00a0safely managed sanitation\u00a0service\u2014\u2018a toilet, not shared with other households, that either treats or disposes of human waste on site, stores it safely to be emptied and tried off-site, or connects to\u00a0a functioning sewer\u2019 (worldtoiletday.info). In fact,\u00a0there are\u00a0millions\u00a0of people\u00a0who have no access to a toilet whatsoever.\u00a0This leads to contamination of water supplies and the spread of diseases such as\u00a0cholera and diarrhea.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

19 November marks\u00a0<\/span>World Toilet Day,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a day to\u00a0celebrate the way toilets improve our\u00a0lives and\u00a0raise awareness of the many people worldwide\u00a0who are living without\u00a0a\u00a0safe, dignified\u00a0way to go to the toilet.\u00a0Safe access to toilets\u00a0at home, in the workplace and at school\u00a0is\u00a0especially crucial for\u00a0women and girls\u00a0to participate fully in society.\u00a0The UN is\u00a0working towards\u00a0<\/span>Sustainable Development Goal 6<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to \u2018ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all\u2019 by 2030.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
