Referencing<\/span><\/a> is one of the\u00a0core\u00a0elements of\u00a0academic writing\u00a0and something\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0become very familiar with during your\u00a0studies.\u00a0But if you’re new to university or it’s been a while since you’ve last studied, it may\u00a0seem a little\u00a0confusing and hard to know where to start.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0is\u00a0referencing?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>academic writing<\/span><\/a>, you need evidence to support the arguments you’re making.\u00a0Referencing is\u00a0how you acknowledge the sources of\u00a0the\u00a0information\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0used in your assessments, and it helps to demonstrate your commitment to academic integrity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is academic integrity?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Academic integrity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is all about being honest and not misrepresenting the work you do, and it goes hand in hand with accurate\u00a0referencing.\u00a0You probably\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0like it if someone else took credit for your ideas and passed them off as their own, right? How do I know if I’m doing my referencing correctly?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have <\/span>referencing guides<\/span><\/a> for all the most commonly used referencing styles. They have\u00a0loads of examples on how to quote and paraphrase in the text of your assignment, as well as how to format\u00a0all the different resource types you might find, including journal articles, books and webpages in\u00a0your reference list.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which style do I need\u00a0to use?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, check your course’s <\/span>Learning@Griffith<\/span><\/a> assessment information to determine the referencing style you should be using. If you’re still unsure, ask\u00a0your course’s teaching staff.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
