\u00a0<\/span>As Trimester 2 begins, you may soon get your first assignment. Whether you\u2019re a first-year student or continuing, it\u2019s always good to review how to write, edit and correctly reference your assignments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s get started!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your type of assignment? Make sure to read over the assignment description, due date, selection criteria and task sheet. If you\u2019re a bit confused<\/span>,<\/span> then check out the Griffith Gold Coast Student Guild\u2019s example of how to <\/span>understand your task sheet<\/span><\/a>. The Library also recommends referring to the <\/span>General Glossary of cognitive verbs<\/span><\/a> that can explain exactly what your teacher will expect to see from words such as \u2018analyse\u2019, \u2018contrast\u2019, \u2018examine\u2019, \u2018reflect on\u2019 and more.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that you know what the assignment is asking of you, it\u2019s time to focus on the topic. Whether you have an assigned topic or have to decide on one\u00a0 – it\u2019s best to identify the major concepts of your task. This will be handy for when you are looking for resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One way to find your major concepts is to <\/span>ask questions.<\/span><\/a> Breaking your task down into questions will help you focus your research and writing and develop a logical response to the topic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next it\u2019s time to <\/span>find information<\/span><\/a> for it. It\u2019s best to search through the <\/span>library catalogue<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>Google Scholar<\/span><\/a> as the results will be <\/span>more credible<\/span><\/a> and you will be able to refine your search results by year, topic, format (e.g article, journal, eBook) and more. Have a look at our <\/span>searching tips<\/span><\/a> to help you identify key words and make the most out of your search.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gather all your research and start writing a draft. You can include your sources by <\/span>quoting, paraphasing, summarising or synthesising.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Library offers <\/span>online workshops<\/span><\/a> to assist with writing your assignments as well as referencing. You can also have a look our <\/span>Study and Assignment Skills<\/span><\/a> webpages that explain the <\/span>different types of assignments<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>academic writing<\/span><\/a> and how to <\/span>structure assignments.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When referencing, check your assignment task sheet to see what style of referencing you should be using or ask your course convenor. You can click through our <\/span>Reference Guides<\/span><\/a> that give clear examples of referencing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Draft complete? Take a step away, rest your eyes, then come back to <\/span>proofread your work<\/span><\/a>. Utilising spelling and grammar checkers is perfectly fine but make sure not to rely on them. Asking for <\/span>feedback<\/span><\/a> is also a way to help you polish up your draft \u2013 our <\/span>Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)<\/span><\/a> start from week 2 of the trimester and encourage group work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
