Inclusive Futures: Reimagining Disability invites you to attend an <\/span>Author Talk event<\/span> with esteemed guest Mary Li<\/span> (author of <\/span>Mary\u2019s Last Dance<\/span><\/i><\/a>), hosted by Dr Maretta Mann<\/span>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Li<\/span> (n\u00e9e McKendry) principal rep\u00e9tit\u00e9ur at the Queensland Ballet, faced a unique challenge when her daughter, <\/span>Sophie<\/span><\/a>, was diagnosed as profoundly deaf at 17 months. Mary, a former principal dancer with the London Festival Ballet (English National Ballet), shifted her focus to support Sophie\u2019s journey, juggling speech therapy and adapting her busy ballet schedule.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sophie, determined to navigate the hearing world, learned to lip-read, received a cochlear implant, and embraced mainstream education. As a young woman, she discovered Auslan, enhancing her language skills and boosting confidence. Reflecting on Sophie\u2019s journey after completing her memoir, <\/span>Mary\u2019s Last Dance<\/span><\/i>, the entire family embraced Auslan, deepening their bond.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Mary Li\u2019s illustrious ballet career includes stints with the London Festival Ballet (now the English National Ballet) and Houston Ballet. Returning to Australia, she spent a decade with the Australian Ballet before joining the Queensland Ballet as Principal Rep\u00e9tit\u00e9ur. Alongside her husband <\/span>Li Cunxin AO<\/span><\/a>, the artistic director, they elevated the company\u2019s global standing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary\u2019s resilience, a hallmark of her ballet career, proved crucial in navigating and ultimately embracing her child\u2019s disability. Her story, a fusion of ballet and family strength, exemplifies courage, determination, and unwavering will.<\/span>
