Originally known as Armistice Day, the observance marks the time and day in 1918 that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anzacportal.dva.gov.au\/wars-and-missions\/ww1\/politics\/armistice\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">armistice<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ended fighting in World War I.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After World War II, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day, to remember those who died or suffered serving across all wars, conflicts and peace operations. The poppy, the flower that grew in the battlefields of northern France and Belgium, serves as a symbol of their courage and sacrifice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Remembrance Day is commemorated at memorials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.remembertoremember.com.au\/plan-your-remembrance-day\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">across Australia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slq.qld.gov.au\/blog\/history-told-aboriginal-and-torres-strait-islander-memorial\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">dedicated memorial<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to Queensland\u2019s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women in Brisbane\u2019s Anzac Square.
