{"id":18499,"date":"2025-10-22T09:00:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T23:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/library\/?p=18499"},"modified":"2025-10-22T08:58:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T22:58:13","slug":"open-access-and-policy-a-win-win-for-research-and-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/library\/2025\/10\/22\/open-access-and-policy-a-win-win-for-research-and-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Open access and policy: A win-win for research and society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Policymakers, analysts, think tanks and advocacy groups regularly produce policy documents that shape our lives, often drawing on academic research.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> But what happens when that research is locked behind paywalls?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The answer is simple: when research is inaccessible, individuals and society are poorer for it. Those most affected by policies\u2014citizens, educators, healthcare workers and community leaders\u2014can\u2019t engage with the evidence that shapes decisions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Open Access (OA) changes that. By making research publicly available, OA ensures that everyone can read, share and use knowledge. This is especially critical in areas like public health, education and climate policy, where informed communities are essential.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And here\u2019s the win-win: researchers benefit too.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11192-017-2544-2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> show that OA articles are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fenvs.2018.00115\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cited more often<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in policy documents than paywalled ones. Reproduced with permission from Elsevier<sup>(1)<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, 1,049 organisations, including the World Health Organisation, UNESCO, and national and international government agencies, have cited OA Griffith-authored articles in their policy documents<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><sup>(2)<\/sup><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
