Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Open Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As we reflect on the 2025 Open Access Week theme, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Who Owns Our Knowledge?&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowitja.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/328550_data-governance-and-sovereignty.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous Data Sovereignty<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (IDS) offers a critical lens through which to explore this question. IDS refers to the rights of Indigenous Peoples to govern the collection, ownership and application of data about their communities, cultures, lands and knowledges.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indigenous communities have long experienced the extraction of their knowledge and data, including culturally sensitive information, often without <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openresearch-repository.anu.edu.au\/items\/bec43d2c-5d19-46e5-9f5a-0641c8986b6b\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">consent, context, or benefit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. IDS principles challenge this colonial legacy by emphasising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mukurtu.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">community control<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.gov.au\/first-australians\/indigenous-cultural-and-intellectual-property\/what-and-what-isnt-indigenous\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cultural protocols<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12326002\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ethical stewardship<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of knowledge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Open access and open data does not need to come at the cost of responsible research. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gida-global.org\/care\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, and Ethics, are central to this. They guide data governance in ways that prioritise Indigenous rights and interests, by supporting data use that is open when appropriate, accountable, approved by and beneficial to the communities involved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IDS and CARE Principles remind us that openness in research is not just about access to information, it\u2019s about building partnerships that reflect Indigenous communities\u2019 values and priorities, with shared benefits and responsibilities. By centring Indigenous voices and governance in Indigenous research practices, we can help develop more inclusive models of knowledge and open access.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Want to know more?
